Faculty Initiatives on Teaching and Learning

In outlining the instructional methods to be utilised, SIMS has actively promoted and endorsed the faculty's adoption of novel techniques to enhance the teaching and learning experiences. SIMS emphasises innovation in teaching and learning, incorporating various methodologies and approaches. At SIMS, our approach to teaching and learning is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to excel in a dynamic and globally competitive business landscape while fostering innovation, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the complexities of the business world.

The Faculty at SIMS has been at the forefront of adopting innovative pedagogic practices to augment the overall teaching-learning experience while constantly working towards enhanced student engagement and outcomes. As an institute striving towards academic excellence, we have successfully blended contemporary Information and Communication Technology tools with legacy approaches, creating a superior learning environment for our students. As an institute that actively promotes technology integration with education, SIMS has ensured that the Faculty are equipped with various tools and techniques that considerably strengthen their course delivery. Some of the prominent approaches used to enhance the learning experience at SIMS are as follows:

  • Learning Management System (LMS) as a learning management platform to organise teaching and learning
Our online LMS is at the core of the pedagogy at SIMS. This LMS has been customised to our institutional needs so that it can seamlessly manage the delivery of a course end-to-end, right from its initiation, dissemination of learning resources, guidelines, instruction, activities, assessments and evaluations. While the LMS can manage online education, it has immense potential in amplifying the effective delivery of courses in the offline mode, as it promotes an organised and systematic approach, helping the student immensely in the teaching-learning process.

  • Flipped classroom sessions to enhance involvement and knowledge co-creation
Faculty at SIMS are well-conversed with the flipped mode of learning, wherein students are initiated into the learning material before class. This is done through study material where basic concepts and fundamentals are explained. Students view these pre-reads for the Flipped classroom sessions on the LMS, and the subsequent face-to-face class time is utilised for discussions, problem-solving, and case-based learning.

  • Case-based learning
Faculty have also widely incorporated case-based pedagogy, typically based on real-world scenarios, thus engaging students in active learning and discussions on issues relevant to business and society. SIMS uses high-quality cases from Harvard Business Publishing and Ivey Publishing. SIMS has subscribed to the HBP (Harvard Business Publishing) and encourages its faculty members to regularly use Harvard Business School for teaching requirements. Additionally, faculty use case-lets (shorter case studies) to help with teaching and learning.

  • Role plays to support participative learning
We encourage our students to participate in role-play scenarios where they inculcate negotiation, communication and conflict-resolution skills. It provides real-world scenarios to help the students learn and analyse complex situations and help them make decisions. It also offers immense opportunities for critically observing what their peers are doing, thereby indulging in meaningful discussions and lively interaction. It promotes peer-to-peer learning, which helps them in their careers. They tried to be innovative in one of the Industrial Relations role plays. The Role Play for Handling Customer Objections in Sales, titled - Overcoming Customer Objections in Selling a CRM Software’ included role play for a scheduled meeting between a Sales Executive and a Potential Client at the client's office or via a virtual call.

  • Large online databases as a source of knowledge to aid teaching and learning
SIMS students and its Faculty can access contemporary software packages such as R and SPSS and online databases like CMIE Prowess and Statista. In addition to this, our centralised library portal boasts a rich collection of books and periodicals from eminent publishers such as Taylor &Francis, McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and SAGE. These world-class and internationalised resources support student learning, knowledge, and insights on various topics.

  • Video-based learning
As a customary approach, relevant movies and videos augment the learning experience. Numerous video cases are employed in pivotal courses such as Leadership, Strategy, Presentation Skills and Conflict Management. Students are tasked with analysing these videos and connecting them to the concepts covered in the classroom. For example, the TED talk of Ray Anderson, the founder and chairman of Interface Inc., was shown to analyse and discuss the "The business logic of Sustainability" topic under the Subject of Sustainable Marketing, taught to Semester 4 students.

  • The Bloomberg Lab to enable access to up-to-date information
SIMS has a Bloomberg Lab with state-of-the-art terminals and a goldmine of finance and economics information. Students and faculty use the Bloomberg terminals extensively for projects, assignments and research. SIMS has eight Bloomberg terminals. This provides an opportunity for SIMS students to access the financial data of companies across the globe, and students can use this data for their assignments, projects, dissertations, etc. The data from Bloomberg is considered the most recent and live data on various parameters such as fundamental analysis, technical analysis, price movement, inflation, etc.

  • Field (company) visits
Field trips, industry visits, and field studies offer students hands-on experiences and practical insights into various industries and business operations. These Company visits are typically for the entire day, wherein the students of SIMS travel by bus to a particular company based on the Subject (for example, Human Resources, Operations and Supply Chain). The Faculty accompanies the students on these visits. The photograph below shows SIMS Pune for the students in batch 2023-25 during their visit to Fiat India Automobile Private Limited, Pune. During the visit, the students were thrilled to learn about the on-ground functioning of a manufacturing plant and learned about the fundamental layout of the plant. Post the engine assembly unit, the students were introduced to the car assembly unit.

  • SIMS Pune
  • Corporate shadowing
SIMS supports student learning by organising a day with the Managers of reputed companies at their offices. This initiative helps the students understand the typical work profile of Managers in different functions, such as finance and Human Resources. The insights for practice gained by the SIMS students during the 'Corporate Shadowing' visit complement the classroom teaching on theory and case studies. The photograph below is of a 'Corporate Shadowing' visit by SIMS students to the Pune office of Rieter, a leading supplier of systems for short-staple fibres.

  • Other forms of participatory and experiential pedagogy
In addition to the above pedagogical tools, SIMS faculty continuously incorporate elements of experiential learning, such as industry or retail store visits and in-class presentations. Together, all the above teaching-learning interventions provide a holistic, eclectic, engaging and student-centred teaching-learning environment that goes a long way in transforming our students into technically savvy and industry-ready managers.

    • (iii) The use of Padlet for knowledge co-creation
Padlet is an online tool for brainstorming and collating student ideas and an open platform for resources available to everyone in a single snapshot. It is an excellent technique for student engagement and generating ideas and insights on specific topics. Padlet has been used for several years across the Classroom Divisions by the Faculty teaching HRM to engage Semester I MBA students. Pelo is the screenshot of a Padlet forum where students have shared their views on "The Future of HR." They have come up with interesting comments and have sometimes shared creative flow charts, video links, and links to articles. They also read what other students have shared.
