International Collaboration

FAQ
Do you offer guaranteed accommodation?
Yes.
How proficient should I be in English?
You need to have good verbal and written English language skills to benefit from your course. Most courses require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. You can attend free English language classes at the University to enhance your skills.  SIMS usually guarantees your level of English.
When can I start?
Most courses start in September but some offer the alternative of starting in January. As you will be transferring credits from your home university you will join our programmes in January 2011 integrating the batch which started in September 2010.
What are my study hours?
As a student at Leeds Met, your study hours will be 1200 hours. This will consist of lectures, tutorials and seminars as well as directed and independent study, including group work and library time.  The pedagogical approach in the UK may be very different to what you are used to i.e. less class room time but more time outside the formal classroom environment.
Are bursaries available?
As a student of our partner university you automatically benefit from a substantial bursary which will takes the form of discounted tuition fees. Fees for January 2011 are £5160
Visas. Once you decide to apply you will receive an offer letter and on confirmation of acceptance the university will issue you with a CAS [confirmation of acceptance of study] which will allow you to apply for a Tier 4 visa.  Our South Asia Office will provide advice for visa applications. With a Tier 4 student visa you may work up to 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time during vacations. On completion of your programme at Leeds Metropolitan University, the Post Study Work Visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to 2 years to seek work. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain international exposure and work experience.
What are the living costs?
The cost of living in Leeds is lower than in many other parts of the UK, particularly London and the south, so your money will go further. The British Council advises that international students should budget for about £650 per month to cover living costs, although the amount of money you require will depend on the type of lifestyle you wish to lead.
